Questions members often ask about Safe Deposit Boxes

What happens to my Safe Deposit Box in the event of illness or death?

If you are the only person authorized to access your Safe Deposit Box, consider giving a person you trust power of attorney to access your box in the event of your illness. In the event of death, if there are no other owners on the account, your family will have to go to court to gain access.

What should I do if I lose the keys to my Safe Deposit Box?
Report any key loss to Lake Trust immediately. When you lease your box, you receive two (2) keys. These are the only keys that open the box. If you lose one key, there will be a minimal fee. If you lose both keys, you'll have to pay a locksmith to open the box and replace the lock.

What happens to the contents in my Safe Deposit Box if rental fees are not paid?
If rental fees aren't paid, the property is turned over to the State of Michigan's unclaimed property office.

I have insurance to cover my valuables. Why should I rent a Safe Deposit Box?
Insurance can't replace things like heirlooms or legal documents. It's a good idea to protect those items in a Safe Deposit Box.
